Knox Junior School
The Curriculum

The curriculum offered is one which allows for continuous assessment which is the main focus of the National Assessment Programme (N.A.P.). This is a six year programme which culminates in the children sitting the Grade Six Achievement Test (G.S.A.T.). This is a placement exam, which allows the child to enter the second level of education.

As well as providing all subjects necessary to complete the G.S.A.T., Knox Junior School also offers extra subjects such as Dance, Computer Education, and Spanish.

Children who are slow in reading are given help through a special reading programme which is administrated four days out of each week. A new reading lab which will be used by all students will be built and opperational in time for the 2005-2006 school year. With regards to the foreign languages, Spanish is taught from kindergarten to grade six. At Knox Junior School the children are tested internally throughout each term and they sit exams at the end of each term and a report is sent home at the end of each term. This is to keep parents abreast of what their children are doing.

Extra curricular activities are based on sports and the performing arts, with Knox Junior School competing in the regional and national events. Knox Junior School has a soccer team and a netball team, which compete in local leagues. Knox Junior School is very strong in the area of the performing arts, having medaled many times. In 2001 Knox has won a gold medal at the National Spanish Festival. That year was the school's first attempt in this festival after doing Spanish for only three years.

When I took the post as the principal of Knox Junior School, I wanted to ensure that each child who came to Knox would leave with a solid academic foundation, but also that they would be exposed to activities that would strengthen character and develop their personality. So that is the main reason why we are involved in so many academic and extra curricula activities.

The following is a summary of the Knox Junior School accomplishmement over the last few years.

KNOX JUNIOR SCHOOL ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOR THE 2004-2005 SCHOOL YEAR:

1. On entering the TVJ junior Schools Challenge quiz for the first time, we made it to the second round.

2. On entering for the first time, we placed third in the Manchester 4H competitions in the junior category. We had one entry in the national 4H poster competitions and we placed second island wide.

3. We gained three gold and one silver medal at the parish level in the JCDC dance competitions. Two of the dances made it to the national finals where they preformed creditably.

4. We gained one silver medal in the JCDC speech competitions at the parish level.

5. We gained two gold, one silver, one bronze medal in music at the Paris level in the JCDC competitions. Two pieces made it to the national finals where we gained two trophies for best junior and most outstanding overall classroom instrument presentation.

6. We compete in many local track and field meets as well in the National Prep School Championship which meets in Kingston in June. We came 20th out of 54 schools at the national prep school championships with 12 pts, a silver medal and the trophy for the most improved school.

7. In 2005 we entered 22 students to sit the Grade Six Achievement Test ( GSAT ). Seventeen out of 22 students who sat this test (GSAT- is the exam which places you into high school) got their school of first choice (on registration for the exam their parents had to indicate on a form their five schools of choice in preferential order). To do this they had to score quite high grades. The averages are as follows:
Math---78%
Language Arts---75%
Social studies---79%
Science ----76%
Communication task----75%.
Most of the scores were in the high eighties and nineties.
Our teachers are very dedicated to teaching your children. You can be assured that your child's stay will yield great results.

KNOX JUNIOR SCHOOL ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOR THE 2001-2002 SCHOOL YEAR:

The following was written in February 2002, and shows the amount of preparation that goes into entering the various regional and national competitions that take place toward the end of the school year, primarily in May and June:

The Junior School was awarded two gold medals at the national Spanish festival in January. At present we are awaiting the results for our entries in the National art competition for preparatory schools. We are also in preparation for a National aerobics competition put on by the Jamaica Cardiac Disease Foundation. It is also the term when we prepare our children for the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission Competition in the areas of speech, dance and music. We are also preparing children for the National Inter school debate for prep and primary schools. This term and the next term are usually very hectic periods for us. Our Sports day is also near the end of March.
Last year we held the inaugural Jon Jones track meet. It was quite a success as we had seventeen schools from the length and breadth of Jamaica coming to Knox to compete in track and field events. We came in fourth at the Jon Jones meet. This meet was held three weeks away from the National Prep School Championships so many coaches used it to evaluate the readiness of their teams and we used it to give our athletes a chance to see what their competitors are like, in addition to raising funds to take our team to the championships. Last year we placed eighteenth out of 54 schools in the National Prep School Championships. This year the meet will be on May 4 and due to last year's success we are expecting even greater support. Our team started preparing from the beginning of this term.

We came in second in the National Aerobics Competition finals. We were awarded the prize for the most disciplined team.
