A MESSAGE FROM MRS. MALCOLM, THE PRINCIPAL OF
KNOX JUNIOR SCHOOL:                              COMPUTER FUNDRAISING DRIVE

Dear Knox Past Students
,

The Knox Junior School is in urgent need of funds to pay for the computers which will be purchased on a short term credit. The Junior School (like so many others) is strapped for funds. Knox Junior School is completely independent and does not get any money from the government. Despite this, they have struggled to perform and to deliver quality education which is expected from a Knox institution.
Parents had decided not to register their students at the junior school unless they could be assured that there was a computer lab which was fully equipped. I do not have to emphasize the importance of computers and technology in education today. Furthermore, it is never too early to start the children.
The school would like to purchase 10 computers on credit. This is an URGENT appeal to all Knoxites to help to help with the repayment. It does not matter if you did not actually attend
Knox Junior School. ANY amount will help.

A deposit of $US2,000 will need to be repaid, once the computers have been purchased. The school will then have 3 years to pay for the computers in full. Fundraising activities have been going on at the school, but addition money is needed. It will help Knox to remain competitive. Your support will be greatly appreciated. Again, any amount will help. Please send your donation to:

Write checks to this account: Knox Junior School Development Account #852001089. Send checks to:

KNOX HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS DEVELOPMENT FUND:

Knox High School is badly in need of funds for their Sports Development Fund, the funds raised will help to send students to sports events such as the Penn Relays, as well for the purchase of sports equipment for a new room that they plan to use as a gym/workout room. It would be helpful if the sports equipment could be purchased in the States and sent down to Jamaica. We can find a better selection of equipment at better prices here in the States, than in they can Jamaica.  Do you know of a Knox past student or a friend who works at a gym or a store such a Sports Authority? They may have access to sports equipment at the best prices, or may even be able to have outdated equipment donated to Knox.
To make a donation please send a money orders to:

Knox College
P.O. Box 1735
Spalding, Clarendon
Jamaica, W.I.

Make the money order out to Knox College.
OR:

Make your check out to Novelett Fraser (your donation will be deposited into the Knox FL Chapter account, and then a money order will be written and sent to Knox High School.I will let Rev. Cowans know who the donations were made by).
Mail your check to:

Jean Slosberg
3970 Oaks Clubhouse Dr. #501

The e-mail address at the Knox High School is knoxc@n5.com.jm

    KNOX BOOK AND MAGAZINE DRIVE:

Knox High School and Junior School each have their own library, and they are in need of books and magazines. Please send books that you no longer need to the school of your choice. Please send magazines that are no more that two months old and are appropriate for children to read, to either the high school or junior school. Please send your donations to either of the above Knox addresses. I am sure that the students will appreciate your donation.

WHY WERE THE KNOX JUNIOR SCHOOL COMPUTERS BEEN PURCHASED IN JAMAICA, INSTEAD OF THE UNITED STATES?

The Knox Junior School computers were purchased in Jamaica instead of in the United States for several reasons. A computer purchased in Jamaica, includes a service contract. When a computer is purchased abroad, the service is not included and one has to pay an outrageous amount to have someone repair or work on a computer. Shipping also needs to be paid on computers purchased abroad, which can be very expensive. The school received a discount on the cost of the computers, since the computers have been purchased for a school. The computers can be purchased for virtually the same price in Jamaica as in the States. Therefore, purchasing the Knox Junior School computers in Jamaica makes a lot of sense financially.

The following is a message from the principal of Knox High School:

Dear Knox Alumni,
Over the years, Knox College (High School) has made its mark in the areas of swimming, volleyball, netball and more recently football, cricket, basketball and badminton.

We believe that more can be achieved with more external support. For many of our young people, sports may be the only path to the realization of their dreams as the economic and social constraints take an even more serious toll on the population.

The Sports Development Committee recognize the need for financial support and improved technical expertise at this time to help our youths to realize their dreams.  The effects are aimed at supporting the school in developing their talents and exposing them to opportunities, which would otherwise be unattainable.

Great things can be achieved with your support in this Sports Development drive.

We are therefore inviting you, alumni of this noble institution and all friends who wish to see the growth and development we anticipate in the Sports Department, to join us in this venture.

As life becomes more challenging, people become more hopeless and frustrated unless there is a helping hand extended or a source from which emanates a ray of hope.

Here is how you can help, you can send your contribution directly to the accounts office at  Knox College, P.O. Box 1735, Spalding Clarendon, or  you can make a contribution to the following A/C #851993231 at any NCB branch island wide.  For further information, you can e-mail us at knoxc@n5.com.jm

We anticipate your urgent response.

Knox High School Principal

Hello again friends,
I just returned form Jamaica. Dr. Barbara Jones, Retired Principal of Knox College and Mrs. Gloria Miller Swaby, retired principal of Knox Junior School are both based at the Knox community College. They are assisting Vice Principal Phyllis Hewitt Able, the Vice Principal.
In other matters-the Vice Principal of Knox College is past student-Hyacinth Green Baker. Mrs. Baker hails from Spaldings and is the daughter of the late Bishop Green and Nurse Green.
Nurse Heather Davidson Berry would love to hear from members of the Knox community. Drop her a line (you may know that she has MS and as such does not get around much). Heather is of course the daughter of "Pops" and Mrs. Davidson and was a member of staff of the Knox Community college.

Dr. Lacey received his Ph. D. in Chemical Physics from Stony Brook in 1987.

The following information was submitted by Sandra Dear, in February, 2000:

I noticed an article in the "Gleaner" titled 'Boarding Schools lose subsidy' commencing:  The cash-stripped Ministry of Education and Culture has decided to withdraw from September 2000 the more than $20 million in boarding subsidy it provides to secondary schools and goes on to say the schools affected will be Munro/Westwood/Hampton /St. Hilda's and Knox. I was wondering if anyone has heard how this will affect Knox?  I think it is such a shame that the country is in this pickle financially. Right beside the article is another titled "Dunrobin High to close". What a shame.
Also an announcement of the death of John Burrow, the father of  Jeannie and Lindy (now Millingen) who were students at Knox.
